Celebrating arbitrary dates

I’ve never quite “got” celebrating January 1st as the new year it is a purely arbitrary date with no agricultural or astonomical significance. In my opinion it would be more logical to celebrate the beginning of new year at the winter solstice or vernal equinox.

I do think that celebrating the yearly cycle is a good thing almost all of the life on this planet depends on the sun so even though modern living is mostly insulated from seasonal differences it is a good thing to celebrate.

What feel is pointless is just celebrating numbers. The year 2000 although I went along and celebrated with everyone else I didn’t feel like it was any more special than any other year. Why not celebrate 01:58:31 18 March 2005 (unix timestamp 1111111111) it’s just a number too.
