As most of my friends will know I had a job interview today for an ICT Technician at Devonport High School for Girls. The short story, I didn’t get it.
The long story is…
There were three other candidates for the job being interviewed for the job on the same day as me, down from a short list of fifteen. Two of them were from Devonport High School for Boys with A-Levels and and another one was a female graduate in Mechanical Engineering with some City and Guilds computer qualifications. Firstly we got a tour of the school (I can’t believe they have a school cat). Then there was the question and answer session with the IT people (well the network manager and his assistant). We then had tea and biscuits which was fun because the container with the boiling water was one of those push the button on the top types, where the button didn’t actually work. I took the initiative to open the lid and pour carefully (which I did very well, actually). We were then called in individually for the computer tasks for which I was the last one. The tasks involved swapping out a base unit, unplugging everything and then re-plugging another unit and a task where we were asked to demonstrate how to add up a column of numbers in Excel and how to make a bar chart.
From the feedback I got afterwards I was told I obviously knew my stuff but I came across as nervous in the interview and in the interviewers opinion I should be aiming for something higher than just a technician role.
